| Um... what can I say here? I'm just me I suppose. Some people think I'm interesting, some people think I'm annoying. *shrug* I'm not out trying to be normal. I realized at some point in High School that the people I really wanted to be the most like not only weren't interested in being normal, the were more interested in -not- being normal. So here I am several years later, just doing whatever seem like the best idea at the time and putting together a patchwork existence. It all works out, and as long as it continues to do so, I'll just keep on going as I have been.
My Family is very important
to me.
Where do I even begin here? I -love- my friends. All of them. I hesitate to mention them all by name because I -know- I will forget someone and I don't want anyone to feel left out. Suffice it to say that you all know who you are but in a quick overview of generalizations ...everyone from the UM Marching Band and music department, Girl Scout Troop 95/330 , AGT , the Shire of Hartshorn-dale , Steelsing's Tamora Pierce Fan Club ......etc.etc.etc.
Currently I attend West Chester University in West Chester Pennsylvania. It's a nice school and a not bad place to start out one's college experience. I doubt that I'm going to graduate from here and I'm really juts hanging around taking classes until I can pick from the 500 majors I'm interested in. My Mom says I'm majoring in staying out of work but according to the school I'm an Undeclared Major. I'm trying to take a variety of courses but I'm leaning towards biology. I'm also interested in technical theater, literature, history and computer science. Before WCU, I went to Upper Merion Area Senior High School in King of Prussia PA. It's a really great school and most of my friends still go there. Some of the teachers there are the most wonderful I've ever met and the Music and Drama departments are first rate. The Physics and upper level English teachers are also some of the very best. At UM I was involved in Marching Band, Concert Band, Orchestra, Choir, and Stage Crew. Other school I've attended include Roberts Elementary, Caley Road Elementary, The Woodlynde School, and Upper Merion Area Middle School.
I have two computer that are technically my own. One is Ciaran is my precious Compaq Presario 1200 series laptop. I got him for my graduation/18th birthday present from my parents last summer. Ciaran is my connection to the world of the internet and also my private writing place. This page itself was written on Ciaran. The name Ciaran is Gallic for "black" and was chosen because like many laptops these days Ciaran is black in color. I refer to him as a person but in my mind he's a black dragon chick. Don't ask why, it's just a mental image thing. In the winter of 2001/2002 Ciaran had to be retired from active service as a laptop because the power connector came loose from the motherboard and after a week spent on the workbench at my Dad's house in 8 pieces I finally got another one to work and epoxied to the back. It was still to fragile to use however and combined with it's used up battery and the lack of disk space (it was only 5 gig anyway) it's been retired to an internet workstation in my living room at home with my Mom and sister. As a replacement my Mom consented to a new laptop, of my choice. In picked out and received a Hewlett-Packard Pavilion N5445. It's is -sweet-. I love it. His name is Barak which means "Lightning". I adore him, ever though her runs Windows XP (ick, evil) I also do some programing. I learned of Karel and Pascal and I still have major soft spots in my heart of them. Now I work mainly in C++ because that's all they'll teach me @ school. I'd like to learn Java and some advanced HTML. And BTW yes, I am majorly lazy and write this page in Netscape 6.2 Composer. It's just a whole hell of a lot faster than writing the code straight.
The Society for Creative Anachronism is a huge part of my life right now. I have Penny to thank for bringing me into this amazing underworld of interesting people. I feel more at home among people from the society that anywhere else in the world. I live in the East Kingdom and in the Shire of Hartshorn-Dale . I also attend Pennsic War each August. The best explanation of the Society is at their web page. I don't trust myself to do it justice here. Within the Society my name is Avice of Greylyng however I have yet to establish anything more than the most basic of time periods based on that name. I'm from around the English/Wesh border in the mid-14th century. It's a pity I know very little about this area and time period. Someday I'll get the chance to do some real research for it.
Adventure Game Theater , AGT for short, is another one of those little known hordes of the most wonderful people I've ever met. Jasper introduced Penny and I to this in the summer of 1999 and although I was a tad emotionally exhausted ( I had been to my first Pennsic the week before, it was way to much un-reality- reality for me) I had the time of my life there and I've gone back for two other sessions and have plans to do so in the future. Although it commonly refer to it as my "LARP camp in New York" when I'm talking to people to whom I have not yet explained it fully, it's so much more. I would like to thank everyone up there for giving me this wonderful outlet for myself.
Music in my life is split into two categories... the music I make and the music I listen to. The music I make is either singing or with my flute (or sometimes recorder). I've always loved to sing although I don't do it particularly well. I'm shy about singing solo in front of people. I was in the Viking Choir in Upper Merion High School for two years and I also sing along with most of the music I listen too, though mostly when I'm alone in the privacy of my room or car. When I'm at Girl Scout Camp I never hesitate to join right in on song I know. My Flute has been my ticket to some of best groups I've been in. I got my first flute for my birthday in 10th grade and Joined the Upper Merion Concert Band. I was in the Marching Band for one year previous to that as a member of the Color Guard on Flag, baton and chain flag. I was then in the band for my Junior and Senior years as a flute player and last year I was in the WCU Marching Band. I have also been involved with the Upper Merion Orchestra as a Flute Player. As for music I listen to, there's a lot of
it. If it's quiet I like to have music to fill the space. I've also been known to listen to the Radio Stations to 88.5 WXPN: University of Pennsylvania , NPR , and Y100 100.3 : "Philadelphia's New Rock" .
I don't read as much as I'd like to and in the interests of web space I'm going to restrain myself from telling you every author I've ever read. A few I think deserve mention are (Please, I beg you, forgive any errors in spelling as I do not have these books in front of me to consult) Tamora Pierce , Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinline, Lois McMaster Bujold , Madiline L'Engle, Patricia Wreede, Roger Zelazny and Glen Cook. For the most part I read Science Fiction and Fantasy but I'm also interested in technical and non-fiction books, history and the occasional trashy romance. I also subscribe to Asmov's Science Fiction Magazine.
I do do some writing although not as much as I'd like to. You can visit the Strand Writing Page to see examples of my work. I'm sadly not as inspired as I'd like to be but once in a while something strikes me and I get to do something with it. I'll never make a living as a writer but luckily I never indented to. FOr all of you who can, do or want to write for a living, I applaud you, I just can't see myself doing so.
I honestly don't watch all that much TV but truth be told my favorite shows on regular TV right now are Law and Order , Star Trek Voyager (although I was as disappointed with the ending as the rest of the known universe), Special Unit 2 (an unknown show but way too much fun to predict). I intend to start watching Enterprise when it premiers this fall. Otherwise my Favorite Channels are A&E , Discovery , TLC , History Channel and The Food Network (Long live Iron Chef and Good Eats!)
I really like playing any type of games. I'm not the competitive sort but I like sitting around with people and just playing a game. I like some kinds of "board" games like Trivial Pursuit, Balderdash or Mind Trap but those I mainly play with my family. My real passion for games is in card games. My absolute favorites are Set, Fluxx, Pit and Plague and Pestilence. These all require special decks but I think that the extra cost is worth it. Recently I've also just begun playing Magic (after 6 solid years of avoiding it) and I'm having quite a bit of fun with that. I'm still learning about all the card and rules and strategies but I can still win if my opponent plays like I'm a beginner, which he almost -always- does. Good places on the web to look at games are www.setgame.com and www.wunderland.com.
I've done Online Role Playing for a while now starting with an alter ego named Rarcke who had a magic couch, uncanny accuracy with a phaser and a way with toasters. This was on Alamak chat where I also hung out under the names Birdie, Janeway and Alanna. Since then I've moved on to a Tamora Pierce Tortall Role Play run by Steelsings . There I played Tala Alessfei a Staffbearer ; Retaka of the Darkstar, a pirate; Narisha Kamli, a lady of the rouge and finally Alys Danton a healer and innkeeper. All off these characters are currently on hiatus as I've just been way to busy to play in over a year.
Okay, I'm going to admit it, I do way to many crafts. I'm going to try to list them here but for information on a specific one you're going to have to contact me to talk about them. *big breath* Chainmaille, lucet, Sculpy, wirework, pewter casting, duct tape crafting, glass bead jewelry, painting, ceramic wheel potting, drawing, celtic knot drawing, soap making, glass etching, stained glass piecework, quilting and candle making..
I've been a Girl Scouts since I was 6. I live in the Freedom Valley Girl Scout Council , in eastern Pennsylvania. I've been in numerous troops most recently Senior Troop 330, Upper Merion Service Unit in King of Prussia. I've earned many patches and earned 3 service bars, the Senior Leadership Pin, Senior Challenge and the Dreams to Reality Special Patch to name a few. I also completed my Gold Award in the Spring on 2000. I am currently involved in sharing my project with Scouts in my area though workshops. The Summer of 2001 I worked at the Freedom Valley Summer Camp Tohikanne under the councilor name Ribbon. It was a really fun experience and I absolutely loved all the kids I got a chance to work with.
I have some formal drama experience. First in Upper Merion as a member of the Stage Crew and one-time actor in a children's theater production of The Phantom Tollbooth. I continued my theater tech experience into College with a class in Technical Theater (Costuming, set building, lighting, sound ect.) Where I was billed as Costume Crafter for the WCU production of Hamlet. It wasn't that big a job though. It was however tons of fun. I'm currently taking an acting class and I intend to stay involved in Drama as long as I can.
Comics
I read a lot of different comics. Online I like Sluggy Freelance , User Friendly, Diesel Sweeties , Red Meat and Chopping Block . Sluggy is just general fun, UF is for Geekdom, Diesel Sweeties is raunchy fun and Red Meat and Chopping Block are from Jasper, 'nuff said. Other comics I like but don't read much of anymore are Dillbert, Helen Sweetheart of the Internet, Calvin and Hobbes and Farside.
